compacting the DBs?

I downloaded the databases and opened shop.mdb and see all sorts of old field entries (like in the category table)

is there any way to clean that up? It seems to me that the database must get huge after a while if you don't remove entries (when I delete a category, for instance).

Can someone please elaborate on how this information is kept in a useful, compacted state?
