Default Shipping quotes by SIZE

We have many items that are large, but don't weigh that much... when the cart calculates shipping, it does it ONLY by weight.

I know there is a way to pass this data to the shiping carriers for a quote..

Here is a nice example of what i'm talking about:

Using FedEx's calculator on their site, if i were sending a 45lb box from here in FL to Cali, the online shipping calculator on fedex's site says $36.98... BUT that is assuming a 1" x 1" x 1" box.. and if you don't give it the size vaiable, all of thier quotes are based off of a 1" x 1" x 1" box...

BUT if i enter the actual product size of 45" x 24" x 20"..... now it costs $106.91 to ship it!!!!

This NEEDS to be fixed in the program... we want to use real-time shipping on our site, not flat rate.

Default Hmmm....

In defence, I don't know of another cart that does that- it would be extremely complicated, in my opinion. I don't even know if any of the shipping companies can do it online....

FedEx does it on their site when you do a shipping quote.... the size is vital to a correct quote.

So how would you do a shipping quote on the above product? Are you going to take the $63.93 hit if someone orders that product?

Well, no. Both UPS and FEDEX use dimensional weight- meaning the size of your box is always going to be the same no matter where you ship it. If the size is always the same, wouldn't you just list it as 70lbs, or 30lbs, etc? This is the way we do it. It only becomes difficult with a bunch of items together, or you have more than one box.
