Text box options

There are some capabilities that would be useful to those who offer personalization or monograming for merchandise:

It would be useful if we could specify limits to the number of characters in a text box. Sometimes a customer will request more characters than we allow. We have to contact them to make changes.

It would be useful to be able to allow the customer to select typeface or font for their text and type their personalization or monogram in that same font. They would have an idea of how the text would look on their item.

A step further, of course, would be to allow an image of the item and allow the customer to type their request on the appropriate part of the item for the personalization. This would give an even better idea of how it would look.

We would need to be able to offer a selection of typefaces of our choosing and the ability to upload custom fonts to our account. With this we can be much more certain that the customer gets what they see.

Finally, it would be very useful, in general, to have true option daisy chaining. In this case, if we offer two lines of personalization, the second line would require that the first line be selected. This way we could offer the first line at one price and the second line at another price.

Perhaps, there are other 3D Cart users that could use these features.

I am totally with you on the text box limit of characters. We offer alot of items available for personalization, and although we list the max number of characters, no customers seem to pay attention to this.

I also wish it could be set up that certain text boxes would only appear, after a previous selection was made.

I.E. If they select from a drop down that they want personalization then the text boxes to list the personalization appear.

I have many of situations where items can only be personalized with a min order, but since the text boxes are alreay there, my customers fill them out anyway, and ignore the part where they have to buy a min amount.

Although there's not an option in the admin interface, you can set the text box size in the .html files with the code size="__" (fill in the total character length). Internet Explorer seems to have a hard time displaying the text box size correctly sometimes though, in my experience.

where exactly would you put that code? I need it on one text box on just certain items...

the problem with this is that this will affect all text boxes. if you limit the characters on one, you will limit them all. is not a problem for you?

yes that would be a problem. I just need it on text boxes for a few items... not all items with text boxes.

is there a way to limit the characters for a text box on one product?

only way i can think of would be to have a custom javascript function written to restrict it.

Not sure if it would would work but you could set up the code as mentioned above to limit the number of characters and instead of putting a hard number in you could use call a custom field (one of the short ones 1-5) and then on any product where you need this functionality based on the options you would enter a value in the corresponding custom field. This would allow you to only edit the template once and then just fill in the product field with the appropriate number for that product.

I have not tested this and it may not work for numerous reasons, but I thought it was worth throwing out there.....
