Ships in multiple Boxes

We have many abandoned carts where multiple items (>50) are added to the cart causing all of the shipping choices to fail because of weight restrictions. It does not fail if the items are set as self ship enabled.

These can be 5 pound items, so a shipment of even 10 would meet max weight criteria. But when 50 are ordered, shipping choices fail because the cart cannot handle that many. We have had a couple of customers call because of this, so I cannot imagine how many just tried another store.

Is there a way to allow customers to order a very heavy order and have it ship out in multiple boxes to meet UPS requirements without forcing even 1/2 pound items to ship individually, whether the customer wants a quantity of 1, 5, 10 or 1000.

Has anyone used the Custom Shipping Methods: Shipping by Weight and will this overcome my issue.

How do you have your shipping settings set? We set ours like this and it seems to work.
Store Settings: Max box weight = 150

Shipping methods: For each method that applies we set the Min. weight = 0 Max weight = 1000

Try playing with these settings and see if it helps.

we've had this same issue with the cart not calculating shipping charges due to weight issues. We sell heavy items so of course this is very frustrating. Even tried a conference call with fedex but was denied. Never got actual help so I just let it go. I will try the ships by itself feature though. This may help with our larger items.
