help customers purchase gifts (To/From Message)
I should probably wait until v3 is released, but i wanted to go ahead and post this while its fresh in my mind.
One of the biggest selling points on 3dcart was the multiple-shipping option. this is an invaluable tool for many companies that want to sell gifts online. however, after using it, we have found some important missing features that must be addressed for it to be truly effective.
1) To/From Message. Most everyone who purchases a gift for someone wants to be able to specify a to/from message (gift tag). we tried adding this as an option while adding the gift to the shopping cart, but it is very confusing to customers. no one seems to understand that they can specify a shipping address AND a to/from message.
so far, the best implementation of this that i'm aware of is bedbathandbeyond.com. you can buy a product and the recipient will receive it, wrapped in their signature wrap, and with a small gift tag on the outside with a message from the person who bought it. this really adds a nice touch!
2) gift cards destination email. whenever someone purchases a gift certificate, i'd say the odds that its a gift is around 100%. Why would you buy a gift certificate for yourself? So the next logical step is to specify a delivery email address and message. the customer can purchase the gift certificate, and then have it emailed directly to the recipient with a custom message.
as it is now, we have to say on the gift certificate "it will be mailed to you, then you can forward to the lucky recipient.." and it just isn't a streamlined solution, so customers don't use it as much.
i think with these two changes, 3dcart would be MUCH more usable by companies who specialize in gift giving. as it is now, we have gone so far as to TURN OFF multiple shipping because customers were confused by when they had already specified a to/from message for the gift.
