Post Landing Pages - Good or Bad

Has anyone tried to use a landing page on their site? If anyone has, did it seem to help your search rankings or hurt them? I have noticed that several of my competitors have landing pages and they rank very high with them. I've also noticed that they do not have much in the way of content on these pages. Mainly, they say who they are and what they sell, maybe a couple of links and that is it. If you use the landing page on 3d cart, what page gets indexed as the home page? Does the default.htm become the home page or does the home.html page still remain as the home page. I have had a landing page for about two weeks and have not had it indexed by any major search engine yet. I'm thinking about getting rid of it. I was just wondering if anyone else had used them and what the outcome was.
