  • Free Shipping!

We are going to try free shipping for 2010. Not sure how it's gonna go, but, we are going to try. The biggest hurdle is that free shipping must be store-wide, and, you really can't do free shipping on a per-product basis because it really just wont work with this cart. So, we are moving ALL products over to free shipping and gonna give it a go to see if conversion improves.......:)

We've been doing free shipping on all of our sites for about 2 years now. Conversion seems to be quite solid. If you sell cheaper items, it's hard to compete on price when you pad in shipping costs. Especially if someone is trying to purchase more than one item (since the shipping costs are padded into every item they purchase).

The issue we run into a lot is where a customer would purchase a main item, and the accessory is something that basically adds nothing to the weight of the entire package (but it would cost if it was shipping by itself). We had a very popular costume that we had a trick or treat bag with. It's a bag that could retail for 0.99 if shipped with another item. However, if you ship it by itself, it costs about $3 to ship, so you have to raise the price to $3.99. It makes it a lot harder to sell the add-on when it's 3.99 compared to 0.99. You can always do package pricing to solve this problem though.

Yeah, we have run into some hurdles with free shipping. One, you can't do just some of your items. It's ALL or NONE. We tried to transition gradually, but had to stop. One, when you select "free shipping", those items are removed from your Google feed. :( Google requires site-wide shipping policy. So, as we were switching our products, we didn't realize they weren't listing in Google Shopping anymore! Also, you can't mix paid shipping with free shipping in the cart. it just wont work. We may just have to go to plan B. Free shipping based on order $$$ or Flat Rate shipping based on weight. Plan C might be free shipping with QTY discount pricing. We will maybe think along those lines...:)
