  • How to set top_category

I'm trying to create datafeed files for shopping engines. The generated datafeeds are using "top_category" for the category of the product. My products are assigned to multiple categories. It seems which category is chosen for top_category is random and in many cases not what I want. I've not been able to locate any info on this field.

What is the algorithm being used to obtain the top_category field and is there a way to set it (via imports)?

As per our developers, we don't specify that it would be the first or last category that will be used for this. There is no control over which category it'll use.

I finally found the information needed to disagree with your previous ticket response below.

      reference ticket - BWT-987-55239

We recommend that you use the new Google Feed Export which allows you to specify the matching Google Category.

Let us know if you need anything else.

*****Base on prior communications by GonzaloGil Administrator - the above statement is not true.*****

I quote: " For example, you are sending categories, instead of top_category, which Google would expect (they don't like 1 item being on multiple categories, so the top_category field only sends the first one."

        Chris,
To be clear, when i said top_category, its the top / 1st one returned by the query from database. We don't have a way to identify which 1 of the multiple categories you assign to the product is the primary. If there was, you would see it on the store noted as such, or give you a way to specify which one is the top/primary. Since the system has no idea which category is the top/primary, when the script executes, it really could return any of them. The idea of being able to pick the top category has been considered, and it's something we might add as a feature, but as of right now, what you are seeing is the expected outcome of the way the system works and it is not something that can be changed easily.

OK, I think where I am getting confused is "top and first" returned from the database query - is not the same as "top and first" listed in the product information "Categories" field. Thanks for clearing this up. I misunderstood that the "top and first" listed in the product information "Categories" field to be the "primary".
