  • 3D PHOTO RENAMING PROBLEM- Just us??

Just recently we have incurred a problem uploading individual photos directly from our computer. 3d is renaming them by deleting all the spaces in the name. This creates a problem for us when we do updates via Excell since our spreadsheet has a different photo name than the one 3d truncated and stores, we have no product photo being displayed.

Is anyone else having same problem?

It also removes periods (.) in the same way. Have you tried underscores (_)? It's much prettier in a url to see "image_name.png" than "image%20name.png"

If it's too much trouble to actually change the individual file names, you may have to export the new names from 3dcart and have them on file, or else just omit the images from the excel file. How often do you need to update your images?

As an ex-web-programmer, I'd like to pass on a little bit of advice regarding file naming for anything used on the web (web pages, web images, downloadable files, etc). NEVER use spaces in the names. If you ever have to include those file names in database queries, javascript scripts, spreadsheets, or a myriad of other things, those spaces can completely hose up a web site and make it non-functional. So if at all possible, do yourself a favor and rename ANY files that have spaces in them and replace the spaces with either dashes "-" or underscores "_". You will save yourself a world of grief by doing so. :)

We have over 4000 photos on site with names as long as "AIR DEFLECTOR INSTRUMENT CLUSTER PANEL LH 93-96 CAMARO USED 17997615.JPG". Renaming them all is NOT an option and the names are critical for locating the right product when pulling inventory for shipment since many products have very similar names.

We had a Pro Store prior to signing with 3D and this was a critical issue in our selection of cart/host.

This problem just began a few weeks ago and we been online since 2/09.

Just wondering if anyone else had suddenly incurred the same problem.

Unless it is resolved may lead to switching hosts/cart.

          Hi

PS may have allowed it because it is not a platform that adhered to the industry standards ( I was a PSer too).

I would suggest take the time to change the file names to adhere to file naming conventions that is established web-wide. As @piaf pointed out NEVER use spaces in file names.

Even if you switch hosts this will be an issue down the road as it will catch up with you sooner than later (as it did here). If you plan to be an online business it is important to honor the standards established.

I assume by that statement that you have had a site with 3DCart since 09, didn't have the problem before and it started just happening? If so, has anything changed on your end, such as the spreadsheet software, the way you are uploading/downloading (FTP vs dasboard), etc?

It's an easy fix in excel. If your uploading you already have the image name in the file. Select the column with all the picture names and do a replace. You can use just a space in the find and nothing in the replace with field. Select replace all. Now when you upload it matches what 3d has. You can do it for the thumbnails too.

I do it all the time to build the image links.

Guess I was not clear on problem. We have over 4000 photos named with spaces which were uploaded to site via FTP & File Manager. Just recently using File Manager to upload one product photo at a time, the photos stored on our computer with spaces in name are being uploaded without spaces. So our names are wrong on our inventory spreadsheet and on our computer. Should we update in future, photos will not appear since 3D has them with no spaces.

Changing names in Excel is easy, but how about renaming 4000 photos? Then we have to delete all of them from 3D and upload them all again.

Not being able to have spaces in photo names was one of the reasons we left Pro Store. We were assured that 3D allowed spaces.

We use _ for "&" since this is a forbidden character. We use - as "through" for fitment for model years.

As you can see photo names are very similar. Employees in shop sometimes have to refer to the photo to distinguish what product to pull.

Guess we are the only ones incurring this problem.

To mass rename files, i've used this in the past:

Mass rename multiple files, photos & mp3's with Flash Renamer! Batch rename since 1999!

Now yes, you are going to have to download the files, run this, then re-upload them. Its going to take a bit of time, but, since its via FTP it won't count towards your bandwidth.

it looks like all the suggestions you are getting is to change your file naming conventions as space is not allowed in file names on the web.

Have you tried to contact Support to see if there is anything they can do to help the situation?

EDIT: it looks like you got an answer from 3D....
