  • Totally Messed up my website -- quitting time?

Well I tried to mess with my global footer and align up my credit card images, etc. Not being able to see the coding in WYSIWYG except for what I was inserting -- my website is completely messed up. Meaning there is basically nothing on there -- all formatting is completely gone. I tried to install a new template and start over but to no avail -- those are messed up to. Maybe this is my sign I need to quit my business all together.

Looking further, I may be able to salvage it. Looks like while messing with the global footer, I removed all of my links at the bottom of the page and somehow made my page really wide. I think if I can get the coding for the bottom and reduce my margins on my site to where they are supposed to be, then I can salvage my site. Looks like everything else is still there, so it is perhaps just some coding that needs to be tweeked.

Sorry I am about to run out the door so I can't give you more involved advice, but always back up your code before making changes to it. Just copy and paste it into a text editor.

Thanks and I will be sure to do that next time. Still waiting for support to respond. I think it is fixable.

Hang in there. Depending on the support person you get, you should be okay soon.

They are taking a long time to respond. However, usually they are very quick and helpful. Like you said "it depends on who you get".

The learning curve can be steep but be patient and stick with it. Keep reading and experimenting. Don't be afraid to learn some basic html it will help to understand how everything works and will be a huge benefit in the long run. 3dCart is very customizible and that seems to be a big part of what their customers value.

If you were making changes in the global footer try disabling it and see how that looks. There likely is just a formatting issue in the footer. I personally don't use the WYSIWYG editors anymore. I found they created messy code and created more problems than they were worth.

I think I played with my site for 2-3 months before I "opened" the store and I continue to tweak and modify things. Hang in there and good luck.

Thank you for your response. And yes, there must be some formatting code in the global footer but I am not certain why modifying it one one template would effect every template I tried to install. Four hours and still no response from 3dcart -- that is odd. Also, I am learning html and SEO -- something new everyday. I am trying to hang in there and build my business but it gets very discouraging with lack of people visiting and lack of sales.

3dCart can do a restore. I believe there is a fee, may be $80.

Your not the first one to not make a back-up before making changes :-)

I had to contact a web designer because support never replied to my email. I think it is just an issue with margins that has made my site totally out of whack. I have to get the designer to do other things, so what the heck.

Still NO response from support -- this is very unusual.

                        have you tried calling them?

I don't think they crawl the forums all that often looking for critical issues...

                        Good luck!

I submitted a ticket early this morning. I did not expect them to look at the forums for issues. That is why I thought the wait time was a bit unusual, as I usually hear something back within 30 minutes.

I am just wondering if this is a sign to quit. I put in a lot of time to my business and this type of stuff happens. It would be fine if I were making money, but I am not. I do all the SEO stuff, offer free shipping and get 1 sale a month if I am lucky. I have been doing this for almost a year. Not looking to make big bucks at first, just for now would like to be able to make enough sales to cover my overhead. It is really pathetic. I wish I knew then what I knew now because I would have never started this.

Can you post the code portion of your footer? I found some weird and incompleted tags that may be causing your problem.

Oh, and only you can answer that question about whether to continue or not. Selling online (I assume that you don't have a physical store?), is a lot of work and takes constant babysitting, innovation, and sadly, time. There's a lot of free marketing out there (social media and such) and while it may be free from cost, it can take a lot of time and diligence. And, you may need to get out there to bridal shows and expos, or put brochures in shops, etc. to spread the word that you exist. Also, get listed on bridal web sites and blogs or maybe even create your own blog to get exposure. Building a site is only the beginning. People have to know you exist.
