I get that intermittently also and have no idea why. I had a customer say it was happening and I went and placed and test order and when I went to check out I got the pop up that said there was nothing in the cart, look up at the top and clearly it was there. I checked my Chrome version and was up to date, I disabled all add ons for chrome, tried again, and had the same experience. I've not had too many customers complain although lately I've heard there are some issues with mobile customers are experiencing as well.

There is another thread in Chit Chat regarding this.
I have seen this numerous times in my store.
Put something in cart, then proceed to checkout, and then a message comes up that there is nothing in your cart.
Frustrating indeed. Surely losing sales on this one....
