  • 404 for products discontinued

We have deleted a product line. To preserve information on previous orders, we have set the product to hide, non-searchable, not for sale. When they are displayed on the 404 page, we have set a redirect to home.asp (when there is nothing comparable) or to a similar category of products. When running a SEO test, it said that there are too many redirects. How do you handle it?

Deleting a product will not drop the item off of past orders - at least it never has for us. We normally delete the product, then add a 301 to a "similar" category page.

      I deal with this regularly

Do not 'Hide' it but instead do this:

      Not for sale
      Not searchable
Remove all categories / Manufacturer / Designer

You can always change the description to link to the new product, if any

People who have the old link can still see it, but new customers won't see it. And indeed it preserves information for old orders with that product.

301 is fine too, but then customers do not see what they purchased anymore.

Thanks. That's a great solution. I meant that we were placing the redirects on the 301 page "unmapped" that 3dcart has provided (nice). Do we need to do anything on the 3DCart unmapped page or will that automatically update?

We have 8040 page redirects. Some of these are product lines that were deleted entirely (photos, etc). as long as 5 years ago. When the 301 feature was released, 3Dcart suggested that we enter home.asp on discontinued products to reduce bounces from Google Analytics. Because our SEO analysis showed "too many 301's", would we be better off just deleting them on the "Page Redirects" page? (Very few customers would be looking for them.)

Could you simply move the items is a new category "Discontinued" which you could hide as well.
