  • Discount Based on Payment

My boss just asked me if it was possible to add a surcharge or discount based on the payment type. Does anyone know if this is possible?

    Thanks.

Do you mean like a small percentage if a credit card is used to make up for your fees you're losing on a credit card transaction and/or a discount for echeck/cash/money order? If that's the case, I'm curious also

That is exactly what I'm talking about. Either a fee for credit card or a discount for ACH.

That would be nifty. I deal with a few vendors where I get my supplies for my products and they add 3.1% or a flat fee for credit card/debit and offer no discount for ACH or check, etc. so I know there are alot of merchants getting tired of eating the fees on these transactions, but they do it manually. I was thinking of just adding a small percentage to my products to cover the cost because I hadn't found a way to do that yet

Be careful: Adding a fee is most likely illegal with your credit card agreement

What you are allowed to do is give customers a discount

nicolas_t Unlikely - many stores charge fees to run certain card types (or cards at all).

However, you are likely to turn customers off to your site if you charge these fees. They have no choice but to use a card really... so just bake the fees into your products. This way the customer still pays your CC processing fees, but it doesn't make it so obvious.

Surcharges for credit card purchases have been allowed as of 2013 due to a class action lawsuit. However I think there are 10 US states that prohibit it. I can't figure all of it out. Why can't everything be cut and dried!!!!

I would love to be able to instantly give customers a discount for using other payment options than credit cards. There is nothing the cc associations can do to stop you from doing that!

I've seen this before on some websites...rather than a "surcharge" for Credit Card, the item is priced at "face value" (list price). Paying by Bitcoin offers a slight discount. Check/Wire has yet a greater discount. Perhaps that is how those companies get around the "charging a premium for Credit Card payments".

In terms of it being possible on 3D Cart, I have no idea...

It would be great if 3dcart would post the answer. This post comes up in google searches.

Chris, this isn't possible right now. The closest thing you could do is put the customer in a group, and assign specific payment methods to that group, and potentially a discount, so that when the customer shops, he is getting that discount and only way to pay is the method you want them to pay with, not ideal, but there just isn't a way to change the order total based on the payment method at this time.
