@Birdsafe It's the same logic for coupons, promotions, gift certificates, since from the time they leave to paypal to the time they come back, promos can expire, gift certificates could be used on another order, etc, the full amount is passed as the estimate, then the correct amount shown on the order form will actually be passed as the final order total.

Thank you GonzaloGil while that makes sense, I'm curious as to how a customer's store credit would no longer be available in the minute or so it takes PayPal to return to the site, unless of course it is for one of those few "pending" paypal orders where a user is paying paypal by check.

The way Paypal works is you send an estimate balance, and then you can take UP TO, the estimate balance when they actually come back and checkout.
So, if we did subtract the store credit, the problem is that at the time they come back hit the checkout, if the credit is no longer available, you would have a problem collecting the rest. For this reason, the estimate is sent as the current invoice price minus any other gift certificates/credits, and after the verification that they are available, the correct balance is passed to Paypal.

    PayPal Not Recognizing Store Credit

I'm not sure if this is a "bug" or something that just can't be done, but it confuses customers. A customer has a store credit, sees it on checkout and then checks out with PayPal - PayPal does not recognize the store credit but tells the customer they are going to be charged the full amount (before store credit) -- when they come back to the site the store credit is applied and their PP account is charged correctly,. but I'm having to take phone calls saying their store credit is not showing up and PP is going to debit the full amount.
