Sitemap Index

My sitemap has been downloaded by Google; however, no pages have been indexed.

Does this generally take awhile, or is there something wrong with my sitemap that is preventing it from being indexed?

Currently, I'm deleting the .txt sitemap in ftp and then resubmitting my sitemap to Google.

Any other preferred methods for doing this?

Google is slow about indexing pages, and they have never indexed all my pages at one time according to the webmaster tools feature.
