  • Product Names & URLs. Loosing SEO rankings

I just ran a test on a product and found out that if I change anything in the name of the product, the URL changes, and hence, any SEO ranking we had for that product is gone.

I like how 3dcart generates the URLs from the product name, but it seems that once set, the URL should stay that way unless it is changed by the user. We change product names regularly based on customer input, small changes from the vendor, or many other reasons.

I guess you can get around this by creating 301 redirects, but that is also cumbersome, everytime you remove add or remove a word from a name. And once you edit a name, you don't know what the old URL was :(

maybe we can have a checkbox in settings, and on the product page: Change URLs dynamically when product Name Changes Y/N and default it to NO.

What about just changing the URL in your Meta Tags section if you change the product name?

    https://support.3dcart.com/index.php...d=125&nav=0,19

That should help you maintain the name url you had from your initial naming convention.

We are moving our site from a different platform, so we are using 301 redirects to send our old URLs to the new URL. 301 redirects do not work in 3dcart if you use custom file names.

The only option to fix a URL change is another 301 re-direct, and we would have to edit the original re-direct to boot.

Also, my worry is accidentally (or absentmindedly) changing the product name, and boom, the URL changes. Not cool. then you have to go hunting, what the heck was that old URL, and do a 301 redirect or a custom file name, that is assuming you realize that you did change the URL by accident.

You can either keep the old product and inform your customers that a new product has replaced it or just 301 redirect to the new filename. I keep the 301 redirect link in my shortcuts so i have quick access to it when the time comes. Just make a habit of copying down the url before changing a product name or use google and find what it was and use that. If you cannot find the url in google then chances are a 301 is not really needed anyhow.

3dcart made a fix for this

Now 301 redirects work with custom file names. So we gave all products and categories custom files names and now we can change names to our hearts content without the URL changing.
            Thank you 3dcart.

Cool, thanks for the heads up. Thats a nice feature to have. I just wish the custom urls supported forward slashes, so i could rewrite them to match my old urls and not need any 301 redirects for products and categories.
