  • 10.1.4 Removes Keywords from Meta Tag Wizard decreases functionality

Getting rid of the keywords in the Meta Tag Wizard does not account for how it diminishes the functionality of the cart and fixes something that was not broken. The keywords in the information tab are not always the same as those for used for meta tags.

The information keywords list is useful especially for common misspellings or synonyms because the site search feature has access to them. The number of information list keywords can easily exceed the recommended number for the keywords meta tag with search engines that still use it because it may appear to be keyword stuffing or spamming. The keywords meta tag is ignored by some search engines, Google and Bing for example, but it does not hurt to key it for search engines that still use it.

If a customer would like product recommendations, temporarily put a non-sense word in those product's information keyword list, a word that does not appear anywhere else on the web site. The site search will pull up only the products with that keyword. Remove it when it is no longer needed. With this change, the search engines will treat those non-sense words as a negative ranking signal because they don't appear on the page. This will negatively affect SEO.

Note: Smart categories can be used in a similar way but because their urls affect navigational structure and may get indexed there are negative consequences for SEO. By using the information keywords list, these non-sense words are never ranked by the search engines. In addition, they are valuable because they can be seen in the site analytics giving insight to that particular customer's thinking.

Also, the information keyword list has some hidden functionality which if used should not be appear as a meta keyword; See the post by 3dcart-Henry here.

We hope 3dCart reverses this decision.

You might be confused about which keywords area was removed. The meta tag keyword tag has nothing to do with your on-site search. You'll find the keywords section you've described just below the "short description" in the main 3dcart product page tab. Also, in that post from 2011, Henry's talking about the now defunct Google Checkout which is not Google Pay

For a very long time, perhaps since 3dCart's beginning, 3dCart's software automatically uses the keywords in the product information (the ones below the short description) for "meta tag keywords" if they are not specified on the SEO page.By removing keywords from the SEO Meta Tag Wizard, it will always automatically use the information keywords for meta tag keywords. With this change, if site search is set to use the information keywords, they are one and the same as the meta tag keywords unless you continue to create separate meta tag keywords on the SEO page. This is still possible but it must be done manually without help from the Meta Tag Wizard. There was no need to change this.

Henry's quote is only meant as an example of hidden, undocumented, functionality 3dCart built into the information keywords section. The specific example is only meant to illustrate that without specific keywords on the SEO page, anything entered in the information keywords list becomes a meta tag keyword too.

Sure. Fair enough. Anyway, they're not getting rid of the regular keywords field. It's still there after the update. The keywords meta tag isn't of use anymore but you can add it in 3dcart's meta tags field manually if you like. Here's a good article explaining the demise of meta keywords.

bzeltzer So we can safely put more than 13 keywords and whatever we want in the keyword field now since it is only used for the internal search function correct?

We have always put more than 13 keywords in the additional information key word area on product pages. I believe they phased out the meta key word area.

Danab , Yes, this section has no 13 word limit. Just separate keywords and keyword phrases with commas. This section is for store search. It also integrates with smart categories. I have tons of misspellings and plurals entered for many of my products
