  • How to stay current with the cart revisions?

Just curious if anyone has figured out a way to stay current with the revisions and release updates to the 3dcart? We are not sure this is possible or feasible. In many instances, we are still version 3.0 because if you customize or change any listing, product, category or in fact any page html, you are frozen at that revision. Does anyone know of a way to stay current as new rollouts occur?
    Thanks in advance. :)

Unless you have very custom changes (coded changes/custom programming) you will be auto upgraded to the latest version, the version # can be seen on the admin, on the bottom of the page.

Now, your templates, if you customize them, they will continue to work on the new version but will be missing the new features. When a release occurs and you see the release notes, if you find that you want to use these features, the easiest way to get them is to take the template file from the common folder and compare it to the one you are using.

      Thanks for the rapid response!
The main issue we have is, we make minor changes to product listings, category listings, frames, banners and other templates. When a new revision rolls out, all those custom changes, while subtle, they are still numerous, and effect the look, feel and design of our site. For example, a $ sign may be missing, an extra space or nbsp; is needed here or there, an option or extra field change, etc....
You did, in fact, previously, have a side by side html compare tool that was invaluable, but, Just not sure if there is a way to overlay previous customizations to a newer template.

A few years back you had a comparison tool to discover differences in html templates side by side, line by line. I can't seem to find it now. Do you remember that tooL?

        Thanks

Is there a default frame file in the new release?

Gil, when you say compare the template file, are you suggesting to copy and paste the code of the new features into your existing older version?

It depends on how much customzation you have done and if you need the features.

If you did a few small things then i would just replace the templates with the new ones and then re-do the changes.

If the changes were big, I would look into what features you need and just bring in those changes. ie. If you wanted to replace the TOP SELLERS on your layout to the new style, you could look ont he new template, and basically copy the entire block of HTML that deals with that onto your template.

There are some things that you may not care about, ie, the drag and drop feature, because you already have your store setup the way you want it so you can just ignore those changes to the template. I wouldn't go out of my way to add these in to then never use the feature.

You can use a utility like WinMerge - http://winmerge.org/ to load your file and the 3dcart default templates to see the differences. We are working on our own web based diff tool to make it easy for future releases.

                Version

BTW, the new admin page does not show the version at the bottom of the page, or anywhere else that I could see. I know that before the update, the version was listed at the bottom.

                  We just went for it!
While we had heavily modified template, we went ahead and updated to the new template and inserted our custom code in the new template. We found this worked to our advantage as opposed to inserting updated code in an outdated template. YMMV.

It shouldn't be that hard to keep up to date with revisions. You will know which files have been revised by using FTP to check the common files for their dates. If you know when you last revised something, and that date is newer, you have something to change. I think MS word has the ability to compare text, so open in that or other downloadable text viewer to compare, make necessary changes, copy text into template editor or upload. If you keep up with all of the little changes, it shouldn't be too bad. I'm modifying a LOT and I still do it - features and fixes are important for the best customer experience.
