  • Customizing category page

    Hi all,
I'm new to it and still learning to work with the system.
Can somebody help me a bit here?
I'm trying to customize category pages - to have an image and description on top of the page above products for each category.
All I see is a category template I can alter to change how category page looks.
But how do I add customization per category?
    Thanks

You can easily achieve this in the Product > Categories >"Options"
Category Icon - you can browse your added images and assign one
note: this is available for subcategories.

The description should go in your Category Header

Thank you. But I don't see Category Icon anywhere in Options.
Could you tell me where it is?

I see now, thank you. But it's not what I meant actually.
Subcategory icon is visible in product list when you on category page.
I'm looking for a way to have a custom page for category itself.
So that every category has it's own custom page with a banner and short description on top of product listing.
Is there any way to make a custom page and use template script and variables on it? This way I could design a category page the way I want it and use scripting for product listing

you still do it the same way:
In the Category Header; this is a wysiwyg area that you can put an image and description. See one of our pages, this is how we achieved it:

Thank you for trying to help. I appreciate it. I must be really slow.
But this is exactly my question - how do you set the category image in the category header corresponding to the the category?
There is no image associated with a category in any way (only subcategory),
              there is only one template.
If I add an image to template category_0.html it obviously goes to all category pages. I was thinking to define an array of images and in template select one by [CATID]. But it didn't work so far.
I'm sure it must be easy, I just can't get it now.

Also, while we are on category topic - how do you set category url to be what you want - no domain.com/categoryname_c_7.html crap

              Thank you again

                Step by Step:
                1. Goto Products>Categories
                2. Click on "Options"to the right of the Category name
                3. Under "Page Content" locate "Category Header"
                4. If you are comfortable with coding make sure "WYSIWYG Mode on/off"is turned off
                5. Put your code in the white space provided:
                  Code:
                  <div ><img src="assets/images/your_category_image.jpg"><br />your description of this category blah..blah...blah....</div>
                6. If you prefer "WYSIWYG" leave it on and use the icons on the toolbar (it will appear if you have WYSIWYG is turned on)

ok, I got it. Spoon feeding worked! :)
I just couldn't grasp the idea being a programmer that some parts of the code can only be accessed through settings. What - no file to edit for this?! :)
Category header as defined in options goes into [CONTENT] tag in the template.
So I moved up <!--START: CATEGORY_HEADER--> section with [CONTENT] to have my category banner on very top right below main menu.
Mission accomplished! Thanks a lot. You've been very helpful.

Now about those nasty category htmls.... :))

Believe me it is better this way too many people go in the code and makes a mess of things. Any one who doesn't know programming does not need to look at any of the back-end files. They way 3DCart has this setup is perfect, works for everyone, even a novice.
