The answer after working with support and trial and error is:

To define which category template to use:
Go to products > categories and then click the options button next to the category you wish to redefine the template for. Then click the Advanced button in the top right and you'll see a drop down menu next to"Template / Category Page" that will allow you to change the style for that category. The numeric values are all minus 1. Meaning that Style 1 is referring to category_0.html while style 2 refers to category_1.html and so on.

To define which FEATURE_ITEM_TEMPLATE_# block within the category page to use:
Go to products > categories and then click the options button next to the category you wish to redefine the template for. Then click the Advanced button in the top right and you'll see a drop down menu next to "Display Type / Category Special Items or General Products" that will allow you to change which ITEM_TEMPLATE_# block for that category. The options values use:
    • thumbnails - #0 template block
    • Listing - #1 template block
    • Details - #2 template block

    Thank you for everyone's help.

The "Template / Category Page" in the category advanced option controls which template file is used. I am 100% sure of this because I use it all the time.

I believe the "Display Type" option is what activates different blocks within that file.

Are you sure? I was under the impression that the different styles activated the three different optional blocks within the category page and not specify which category_# page to use.

You can set them for each Category under Products->Categories and then look at the options for each Category under the Advanced tab.

Oh, and in the admin panel they are called Style 1, Style 2, etc where Style 1 uses Category_0.html, Style 2 uses Category_1.html and so on.

    Where do you assign them?

It appears the option at Products:Category:Options:Advance Options:Template / Category Page selects which FEATURE_ITEM_TEMPLATE_0 block to use.

They are just different layouts you can choose from. You can make your own as well as call them Category_x.html (where x is a number like 3, 4, etc.) and assigned them to different categories if you like.

    Question about Category Templates

There are three different category pages. There are:
    • Category_0.html
    • Category_1.html
    • Category_2.html

It appears Category_0.html is used for the standard category pages.

What are _1 and _2 used for?
